Reading Tutoring

“Learning to read is a complex achievement, but reading to learn is even more complex and requires extensive knowledge and skills across the components of word recognition, language comprehension, spelling, and writing.”

Working with Boston SLP

  • Tutoring takes place in your home, other mutually agreed-upon location, or virtually.

  • In-person tutoring available within the Greater-Boston area.

  • One hour sessions include 50 minutes of instruction and 10 minutes of consult time.

Reading

Reading difficulties are among the most common learning difficulties in children and adults alike.

Caroline has expertise in implementing a Structured Literacy approach, which has been shown to have a meaningful impact on the rate of improvement for all students.

A Structured Literacy approach is the best choice for students with diagnosed or suspected Specific Learning Disability (including dyslexia), for students who have a more general reading difficulty, for those who may have fallen a bit behind, and for those who simply want to strengthen their written language  (reading, writing, and spelling) skills. The focus of a tutoring program is customized for each student based on his/her/their need.

Reading tutoring meets your child at his current level and can cover foundational skills such as “sounding out words” (phonics), to college reading comprehension, and anything in between.

WRITING

Effective writing is the ultimate achievement of literacy and a necessity of today’s world - no matter the profession. Boston SLP’s structured literacy approach meets the student at their current skills level and follows a sequential approach to skill-building and mastery. Instruction can include basic sentence and paragraph writing through persuasive essay writing, and beyond. Writing lessons often occur in conjunction with reading tutoring, but can be a stand-alone service.

SPELLING

Memorizing spelling words from flashcards has been shown to be a very inefficient approach; it’s time to get efficient and learn how to spell! Spelling instruction occurs in conjunction with reading tutoring, but can be a stand-alone service. As many as 85 percent of English words are spelled based on predictable rules - do you know what they are?  Spelling tutoring is appropriate for students aged 5 - adult. Spelling tutoring occurs in conjunction with reading tutoring but can also be provided as a stand-alone service.

Some handwriting instruction (printing or cursive) occurs in conjunction with reading tutoring, but can also be offered as a stand-alone service.
